Each of our projects is designed to help participants create media that shares their experiences and can be shared with others. Certain environments can offer particular challenges. For example, we were not able to take recording or photographic equipment into jails. So, when considering how to work with women in and out of jail while trying to weave a collective story, we planned to use a variety of media.

The following images were created by women in three workshops — one inside and two outside of jail. Participants were asked to select one color to represent themselves and another to represent incarceration, and then to fill their page with the two colors in a way that represented their story. They then had the opportunity to explain their pieces and then gave them a title. Participants were also were walked through creating a short biography that emphasized their core values, goals, and commitments.
