Survivors' Truths Home
Telling another part of the story
Liberia Project Update
Why Survivors' Truths?
Victimization
is about hopelessness, helplessness, powerlessness, and disconnection
from others. Those who survive horrible things have, indeed experienced
victimization. However, they have also found ways to cope, to escape,
to connect with others, to be courageous in the face of the
inconceivable. This project seeks to draw out and emphasize the part of
each person's story where they were able to find a way through
difficult circumstances.
Survivors’ Truths makes space for a few
of these voices, gives face to their stories, and celebrates the spirit
of survival and hope.
Some Underlying assumptions
When talking about times of trouble, narratives about the problems,
violence, or injustices often dominate. While a crisis is going on,
these accounts are often valuable, full of important information such
as where not to go, who to avoid, and what not to do.
Once the
difficulties pass, though, the stories of the problems continue to be
strongest. People often shut up their horrible experiences, because to
speak of them is to re-experience themselves being overwhelmed by the
problems of their past.
Telling another part of the story, the story of the solutions people
were able to find, helps people to re-connect with other parts of their
lives, other supportive people, and with themselves in a different way.
Hearing or reading the stories of survival is often moving and inspiring to
others--both those who went through difficulty and those who did not.
