Why a collection of Liberian music?
Because there is a lot of good music out there
To raise awareness of and funds for our project
To engage Liberian diaspora especially in supporting grassroots peace-building
Who should be involved?
We are looking for Liberian artists who want to promote their music while contributing to peace-building and reconciliation efforts in Liberia.
We are also looking for groups (associations, online communities) who will help us promote and distribute the collection.
Background Information
Survivors’ Truths seeks to uncover the stories of how people come through the unthinkable with strength and dignity. We are currently working with Liberian NGOs across sectors to support communities in finding ways to carry the past without being consumed by it. Survivors’ Truths: Trying to be all right in Liberia is photo documentary project consisting of approximately thirty interviews and portraits of Liberian war survivors and has already been featured at several venues and events in the U.S., most significantly at the 2009 Liberian Independence Day celebration in Washington, DC. In 2010, we took it back to Liberia to see if and how we might use the project and the approach to support those working for peace on the ground. Together with our Liberian friends, we created a plan that includes a national peace-building conference, an installation at the national museum, and materials for distribution around the country.
